Emergency Medicine Medical Student Rotations
The Department of Emergency Medicine offers numerous courses that provide medical students with a well-rounded background in key aspects of Emergency Medicine. Additionally, through the Department of Emergency Health Sciences, students have the opportunity to gain exposure to emergency care in the pre-hospital setting.
| EMED 3005 Emergency Medicine Core Clerkship | This is a four week core clerkship introduces the 3rd year medical students to the specialty of emergency medicine and reviews principles of emergency care that will benefit a graduate entering any specialty. |
| EMED 4005 Emergency Medicine Selective | This is a sub-internship that is designed to prepare students for the intense and responsible role of the intern. In additional to working clinical shifts, students participate in didactic sessions and perform ambulance ride-alongs to successfully complete the course. This course is an outpatient selective. Prerequisite: EMED 3005. |
| EMED 4006 Toxicology and Poison Center Rotation | The Toxicology & Poison Center rotation is a 4-week, on-campus, pass-fail elective in the MS-4 year. This rotation is designed to develop fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate and treat patients experiencing a wide range of poisonings, envenomations, and toxicological exposures. The learner will develop skills to diagnose and manage acute and chronic poisoning in adults and children, covering the spectrum of not sick to critically ill patients. Participants will learn about the major classes of intoxication/poisoning, as well as relevant antidotes and supportive care. Environmental and occupational toxicology are also emphasized, along with terrorist toxicological weapons of destruction. The concentrated experience of lectures, case discussion rounds, webinars, simulation scenarios, hands-on toxicology lab, journal club discussion, telephone consultations, teaching by Specialists in Poison Information, and occasional patient encounters will provide an educationally rich and productive experience. Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of educational experiences including toxicology case rounds, topic presentations, conferences, informal teaching sessions reviewing interesting cases with toxicology faculty, poisoning prevention, and community educational outreach activities. |
| EMED 4051 Emergency Ultrasound | A 4 week block consisting of lectures from our Fellowship trained faculty within the Department of Emergency Medicine, supervised scanning sessions in the Center for Clinical Ultrasound Education and Emergency Department, independent scanning sessions, and weekly QA and journal club. During this rotation, students will learn obstetric, orthopedic, renal, cardiac, trauma, and procedural ultrasound as well as a variety of other novel techniques and applications of point-of-care ultrasound that we believe will enhance your clinical skills and acumen regardless of your current or future specialization. This is a permission only course. |
| EMED 7000 Off-Campus Rotation in Emergency Medicine | This rotation provides UT Health San Antonio MS4 students the opportunity to do off-site rotations in Emergency Medicine. Please refer to the UT Health San Antonio course catalog for course registration requirements. The following documents must be submitted to Ms. Vanessa Soto one week prior to you starting your off-campus rotation. | EMED 4007 Wilderness and Survival Medicine Elective | The Department of Emergency Medicine offers a four-week, for credit, Wilderness and Survival Medicine Elective (EMED 4007) for LSOM medical students who have completed their Emergency Medicine Core Clerkship (EMED 3005). The elective includes three weeks of didactics and wilderness medicine skills training with UT Health Faculty and a 4-day practicum at Big Bend National Park. The course covers all Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) curriculum, and students who successfully complete the course will receive AWLS certification upon completion. |
| EMSP 4010 EMS-Ambulance | Offered through the Department of Emergency Health Sciences as EMSP 4010, the EMS Undergraduate Elective allows students to participate in ambulance ride-outs with the San Antonio Fire Department. Students will experience emergency patient encounters involving on-the-scene management of medical, surgical, pediatric, psychological, obstetrical, and social emergencies. Students will also be able to observe many different aspects of EMS operations, including vehicle extrication, communications systems, EMS-Police cooperation, and local trauma system utilization. Requirements During 40 requisite patient encounters, the student will make brief assessment notes and assist in the care of patients being transported to the different San Antonio Emergency Departments. In addition, students are expected to attend weekly EMS Grand Rounds on Thursdays and provide a brief presentation based on one of their patient encounters. This will focus on the patient presenting complaint, pre-hospital differential, disease pathology, EMS treatment and Emergency Department disposition. If desired, students may also observe various aspects of the regional EMS and disaster planning process through the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council. |
