Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship

We are proud to be able to offer our Ultrasound fellows the opportunity to gain a mastery of Advanced EM Ultrasound while learning and teaching as junior faculty in such a rich and challenging environment. Our Ultrasound Fellows undertake a rigorous and well-rounded course of study.

Program Highlights

  • Access to the $1M state-of-the-art Long School of Medicine Center for Clinical Ultrasound Education with 10 ultrasound units (9 Sonosite M-Turbo’s and 1 Sonosite X-Porte)

  • A successful EM residency program
  • An active longitudinal US curriculum for medical students
  • Access to multiple US machines, including •   5 Sonosite PX, 2 Mindray TE7’s, 2 Mindray ME8’s, 1 GE Venue Go, multiple different handheld US (GE V-Scan Air, Philips Lumify, Sonosite I-Viz)
  • A pediatric ED with a dedicated Zonare Z.one Pro US machine
  • Emergency Department is accredited through ACEP’s Clinical Ultrasound Accreditation Program (CUAP)
  • Multiple faculty completed the inaugural Focus of Designated Practice (FPD) in Advanced Emergency Ultrasound through the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Staffing clinical shifts in the Emergency Department (8 shifts/month)
  • Presentation of four ultrasound related topics during the Emergency Medicine grand rounds, one of which must be on an advanced bedside ultrasound application
  • Completion of required independent and supervised scanning sessions
  • Record at least 1000 adequate bedside ultrasound studies during the fellowship
  • Completion of all required assigned reading materials
  • Participation in regularly scheduled image review sessions
  • Participation in regularly scheduled literature review sessions
  • Submission of quality research project to the institutional IRB and implementation of research with intent to publish
  • Participation in all ongoing Division of Ultrasound research activities
  • Complete one quality improvement project for the Division of Ultrasound
  • Submit one abstract to a National Conference
  • Participate as one of the supervising educators for residents and medical students on their ultrasound rotations and electives
  • Participate in Ultrasound Division administrative meetings
  • Attend one national meeting during their fellowship year

Teaching Requirements

  • Presentation of ultrasound related topics during the Emergency Medicine grand rounds
  • Participate in a minimum of 20 hours of direct educational activities (bedside teaching of residents/students/faculty, didactic lectures, QA/QI image review sessions, research activities, etc.) per month
  • Participate as one of the supervising educators for residents and medical students on their ultrasound rotations and electives

Research Requirements

  • Submission of quality research project to the institutional IRB and implementation of research with intent to publish
  • Completion of all required assigned reading materials
  • Participation in all ongoing Division of Ultrasound research activities
  • Participation in regularly scheduled literature review sessions
  • Submit one abstract to a National Conference

Ultrasound Development

  • Completion of required independent and supervised scanning sessions
  • Record at least 1,000 bedside ultrasound studies during the fellowship
  • Participation in regularly scheduled image review sessions
  • Attend one national meeting during their fellowship year
  • Fellowship-funded attendance for the ACEP Emergency Ultrasound Management Course

Administrative Requirements and Expectations

  • Complete one quality improvement project for the Division of Ultrasound
  • Participate in Ultrasound Division administrative meetings

Ready to Apply?

You must be:

  • Eligible for Texas licensure
  • Board certified / board eligible ABEM or AOBEM and / or
  • Must have completed a U.S. ACGME-accredited Residency Program in Emergency Medicine
