Medical Education Fellowship

The Medical Education Fellowship provides specialty training for Emergency Residency graduates to prepare their administrative skills for academic medicine. The fellowship provides a hands-on approach to medical student and resident education by working as both an Assistant Clerkship Director and Assistant Program Director.

Medical Educator

TAs a Medical Education Fellow at the University of Texas Health San Antonio you’ll be engaged regular educational sessions with medical students in both classroom and simulation settings, and bedside teaching as an attending physician while on shift. You’ll provide regular input to our weekly Grand Rounds and present regular lecturers and educational content.

Fellows will develop experience in the following areas, including but not limited to:

• Residency Faculty Development
• Curriculum Development
• Mentorship
• Bedside teaching and procedural instruction
• Academic Research
• Review of Academic Literature
• Undergraduate or Graduate Medical Education
• Residency Interviews

Requirements and Expectations

Mentorship

As part of the fellowship you’ll be assigned a number of first year medical students with whom you’ll have semi-regular meetings to introduce them to medicine, and provide career guidance.

Research Requirement

As part of the fellowship you’ll be expected to complete both a Quality Improvement project for the residency program, and a research manuscript created with intent for publication. This will be accomplished with support from your Fellowship Director and support from the Department’s research staff.

Professional Development

Fellows will be sent to a number of conferences through their training including ACEP, TCEP, SAEM, CORD, the ACEP Teaching Fellowship, EvolvED, and MERC for the purposes of personal development and networking opportunities.

Administrative Experience

You will participate in monthly meetings with academic faculty and non-clinical staff of the residency programs, in addition to meetings with administrative staff and leadership of other residency programs.

Clinical Duties

Clinical Requirements include 8 shifts per month of practice as an attending with both residents and medical students. There is an option to increase to a maximum 11 shifts per month with the additional three earning moonlighting income. As a fellow you’ll be considered faculty for purposes of employment and will receive faculty vacation and health benefits.

Details and Requirements

The fellowship is a one-year commitment with an option to increase to two years if the learner desires to pursue a Master’s in Education as part of their fellowship. This decision must be made prior to beginning the fellowship.

Requirements for application include graduation from an ACGME accredited residency program, three letters of recommendation noting your interest in a career in Medical education, and a personal statement discussing your interests, envisioned career plans, and what you see that this fellowship can do to help you accomplish these goals.
