Dr. Ikerd enlisted in the Air Force following high school graduation and initially served as a Russian linguist. He married his high school sweetheart, Sheila in 1988 and they have two sons, Alex and Austin. Dr. Ikerd was accepted into the Air Force Physician Assistant Program in 1993 and upon graduation, he started his career in medicine as a primary care PA. After five years, Dr. Ikerd completed a one-year fellowship in orthopedic surgery. He chose San Antonio as a destination for his last assignment with the goal of attending medical school at UTHSCSA. He retired from service in 2007 and he was selected to attend the medical school class of 2013. Dr. Ikerd joined our first Emergency Medicine resident class in July.

Dr. Ikerd enjoys playing board and card games with his family and friends. He is very proud that his oldest son, Alex is studying physics at the University of Texas. He hopes to vacation to Italy each year when he finishes residency. Dr. Ikerd enjoys working with the diverse group of professionals in the emergency medicine department and he is considering a career in academic medicine.
