Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio's Department of Emergency Medicine employs emergency medicine board certified physicians, physician assistants (PA), and nurse practitioners (NP). The UTHSCSA Department of Emergency Medicine currently staffs the University Hospital's Emergency Center, a level 1 Trauma, Heart Attack and Stroke center that treats roughly 70,000 patients per year. The physicians work collaboratively with PAs and NPs within the Emergency Center to provide emergent resuscitative and intensive care to the San Antonio Metroplex as well as 22 counties in the surrounding South Texas Region. Our advanced practice clinicians function as true "physician extenders" and are instrumental in our department's ability to care for patients. This care can range from urgent to emergent to intensive care.

Our PAs and NPs have a diverse range of prior experience and current appointments including: US Army Special Forces Medics, Paramedics, Flight Paramedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, and extensive experience as Military PAs. Our PAs have held Director and instructor positions within the military EMPA fellowship program. Currently, our faculty holds positions on the UHS credentialing and QI/QA committees.

The Associate Faculty is dynamically involved in the education and training of physicians and PAs (i.e., residents, medical students, PA students). They additionally share in the responsibility of developing emergency medicine physicians and PA residents training with the UTHSCSA Department of Emergency Medicine from San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). The PAs and NPs also precept current and future PA and NP students within the EC and lecture at the UTHSCSA PA School.
