Biosketch: I received my Masters Degree at California State University Northridge in biology in the Center for Cancer and Developmental Biology, attended Creighton University, School of Medicine in Omaha, NE and then returned to California where I competed my specialty residency training in emergency medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center in 1994. As an academic faculty for the past 20 years I have mentored numerous high school, undergraduate pre-medical, pre-professional health students, medical students, graduate students and residents. Since 2011, select graduate students in the Masters Program in the Center for Cancer and Development Biology at CSUN receive the Julie Gorchynski, MD, MSc Research Scholarship Award to advance graduate student research. I also support science teachers and young aspiring scientists within the elementary, middle and high schools in the LA County school district each year that are awarded and recognized for their research projects. I have been involved in clinical emergency medicine, research and education since 1991 in California at Loma Linda University Medical Center, CA, Riverside County Hospital, CA, University of California, Irvine Medical Center, Texas A&M, Corpus Christi, CHRISTUS - Hospital, Corpus Christi, John Peter Smith Hospital, Fort Worth and San Antonio UT Health Science Center. I have been an invited speaker for local, state, national and international emergency medicine conferences, where I had also been selected to present my research. I have numerous publications in medical journals for my clinical research in emergency medicine. One of my awards in research include a Certificate of Recognition from the National Science Foundation and Research Director Program awarded to me by Steven B. Oppenheimer, PhD, NSF/U.S Presidential Award recipient, Director for Cancer and Developmental Biology and signed by the late Francis H.C. Crick, Nobel Laureate, Honorary Project Chair, 2011. As research director I founded the Emergency Medicine Research Associates Program in 2007 at Texas A&M, University, Corpus Christi, where pre-professional undergraduate students are involved in clinical emergency medicine research projects with the emergency medicine residency program in Corpus Christi, TX. I have had the opportunity to begin two emergency medicine residency programs; 2006 at CHRISTUS in Corpus Christi, TX and 2009 John Peter Smith in Fort Worth, TX. My academic appointments have included assistant and associate professor, research director, ultrasound director, medical director and currently clinical professor of emergency medicine. I have been active in ACEP and AAEM where I had been the course director and examiner for over 10 years in teaching and preparing emergency medicine physicians for the ABEM oral boards. Having surfed the world and competed in numerous surfing competitions I continue to enjoy water sports, good food, good music, international travel and visiting family in California and Canada.
