Meet the Chair

Bruce D. Adams, MDWelcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and thank you visiting our website.

We have a vital mission here at the Department of Emergency Medicine. Our first duty always, of course, is to provide outstanding patient centered clinical care here at the new Emergency Department at University Hospital -- Our faculty of over 50 residency trained emergency physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners provide care within the largest ER in San Antonio, treating an average of 70,000 patients each year. The University Hospital Emergency Department is also home to the lead Level I Trauma Center and now Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers for a 22-county region of South/Central Texas and is a designated regional emergency center for both stroke center and heart attacks.

Our Emergency Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to providing an excellent educational environment which will prepare our graduates to successfully complete the ABEM certification exam and enter the career pathway of their choice e.g., clinical, academic, fellowship or administrative. Because of our extraordinarily high patient acuity and our dedicated teaching staff, we are the ideal training site for our equally vital mission --to teach the next generation of physicians and allied healthcare providers. We also train hundreds of residents, medical students, PA trainees and EMT professionals annually and also operate one of the largest medical student core EM programs in the nation. We are building a committed culture of research & academic excellence focusing especially on the areas of resuscitation, patient safety, and operational medicine. Community outreach is also a core mission and we support the University, UHS and other partners in efforts to improve community health both throughout the region and globally, encompassing more than a dozen countries.

We are still just at the beginning of a period of exciting change and tremendous growth for emergency medicine here in South Texas. In less than five years we transitioned from a clinical Division to a full academic Department designation by the University of Texas; started a major residency and 3 new fellowships, created a new Pediatric Emergency Department and an ED Observation Unit, managed a 50% growth in patient volume and the opening of two new Emergency Departments. Keep in touch as we fulfill our vision of becoming both the premier Academic Emergency Medicine Program in Texas and the Emergency Department of choice for San Antonio.
